San Jose Sharks' Dany Heatley thriving on garbage goals San Jose Mercury News

Source:

When they acquired Dany Heatley in September, the Sharks hope they were getting one of hockey's most dangerous snipers, a guy who would launch laserlike slap shots from all over the ice.

The Sharks were sold a bill of goods.

The goals are there. Heatley is among the NHL leaders, having already scored 29. But they haven't been the blistering, highlight-enquire of variety. Instead, Heatley has shown an uncanny knack for ram-and-jam goals from point-blank range in front of the net, surprising even some in the combine.

"I thought when we got this guy that we'd see him slamming home one-timers from the blue line," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. "But most of his are foul-work goals in the paint. Heater scores some ugly goals."

And this isn't figure skating. They don't award taste points in the NHL. A goal is a goal.

In fact, Heatley finds any discussion of how he scores somewhat humorous. All he cares about is that he does.

"There's still the odd aspiration that's a one-timer, where you have time to make a pretty shot," said Heatley, who also is among the NHL leaders with 55 points. "But this is correspond to to what I've always done — dirty goals around the net."

It's also an example of how the perceptions of Heatley have been considerably different from the guy who actually arrived in San Jose. Last summer's soap opera — Heatley's require to be traded out of Ottawa and his refusal to go to Edmonton — has been well-chronicled.

My family has decided to get our first bird. What are the best bird companions for first timers?I don't be acquainted with enough about the Pionus parrots as I've never owned one. They are said to be wonderful companions. They're on the smaller side and they're charming decent noise-wise if you're in an apartment or can't stand unshakeable screaming. They're shy birds that can learn to talk well. They're solid birds that in a recover from in several colorful species, including the blue headed and bronze winged Pionus. They're more extravagant but are well worth the price.

Next come the conures. For a beginner bird keeper I'd go with the smaller species such as the Painted, edgy shouldered, Green cheek and maroon bellied conures. Even the Dusky conure is a tolerable place to start. If you like birds with a bit more attitude, Suns, Peach Fronts and Gold Caps are skilful birds! They're also louder with the exception of the Peach front. Peach fronts do share in a conure's love for cuddling but they're not so hot on being touched and coddled. If you need a beginner's bird that loves cuddling and snuggling into your shirt, I'd go with a verdant cheek. They do have a reputation of being 'nippy' but it can be reduced with training and once in a while. Most Green cheeks outgrow their nippy stage :-) .

Then there's cockatiels and budgies. Budgies are more jesting and energetic than budgies but cockatiels are more hands on. They love their handling and shoulder term. Be warned - if you're eating and they're on your shoulder both species WILL steal nutriment as you're lifting the spoon to your mouth! The good thing about these guys is that they're more affordable compared to the other species mentioned above. Most budgies are progressive untamed but if you can find a budgie breeder who handfeeds their birds, grab one! They're theorized to be one of the best bird companions out there! Cockatiel hens are very sweet and love to associate more than cocks. Males do mimic/talk better than females but I've had a female who knew at least eight or nine assorted words. Handfed is almost always better, depending on how the bird was raised. Try to contact a specific parrot breeder for handfed birds. Pet stores usually don't deal with their birds as much as they should or they purchase from mass breeders. Most local breeders know what they're doing. To be foolproof, ask around for references.

There's the non parrot species such as canaries, doves, pigeons and quail. Canaries have a fantastic song and can be finger trained. They're not as social as parrots but they have their unique cultivation that many people adore! Quail are living garberators. I have three Japanese Quail (Coturnix Japonica) that will shovel almost anything into their beaks, even if they've never seen it before. I get modern eggs almost every day from my pair. They're fun to watch beat each other up though you have to watch that any males in the enclose don't harass the hens too much as he does pluck the poor girls bald in his emergency to breed. If you get a quail, try to get two females or one male to two females. They require special victual to keep them in laying condition. They're like miniature chickens. They lay lay lay and require more protein and calcium than other bird species. The males have a horrible whip-lash type call that's a hoot to hear. The down side is that the males crow at 3 am and sometimes will NOT standstill >.< !

Pigeons and doves are very social but breeders can be harder to find. They're very different from parrots in that they don't give quite as much and they're much quieter. They do enjoy human companionship. If allowed to free withdraw in the home they've been known to follow their owners from room to room, no more than as parrots and quail do. Roller Pigeons are known for their tumbling flight. Fan tailed Pigeons are incredibly decorative with monumental V shaped tails. Ring necked doves are very sweet with a gentle call. They, too, not fail in a wide variety of domestically created colors.

That's a brief run down of contrastive bird species available to first time bird owners. The bigger the bird the more ruction you'll get, the bigger the poop and the farther the food flinging. They're a lot of fun though. My regional parrot club likes to say birds are like potato chips. You can't only have one! I used to have 3 cockatiels. Now I have a flock of 11!

Are there fans with timers to automatically turn them off/on after a certain amount of time?If the fan is on a glow switch the switch can be replaced with a timer. Timers are easily available up to 60 minutes and can be purchased within reach of the light switches at any good hardware store.

Alternately, you can buy a timer that plugs into the fortification then your fan can be plugged into the timer. Depending on the model of timer, you can decide what time it goes on and off, or unprejudiced for how long it will stay on.

Why do all the energy saving light bulbs (fluorescent?) say not to use them with electric timers?Never heard of that with a timer. Timers are acclimated to commericially for fluorescents. I know that you are not supposed to use a dimmer with fluorescent lamps, unless the occasion has a dimming ballast.
