Old timer dusted off, restored to racecourse glory Stuff.co.nz

Source:

Dick Lacey loves nothing bettor than to once again hear the rhythmic tick-tock of a racecourse clock that dates back more than 80 years.

Made in 1924, the colossus clock once stood in pride of place at Trentham Racecourse before it was put out to pasture in favour of digital technology.

Since it was rediscovered concealed away in a storeroom in September, Mr Lacey has restored the massive 2.7-metre stopwatch with all its original parts – except for the notes hand which he made out of a Tui beer can.

"I'm thrilled to bits," he said. "I was a bit worried that as you get older that no one cares about this stuff."

The clock, made by T Bleak & Co of Melbourne, was retired in the 1980s – replaced by an electronic version after punters "demanded better timing", Mr Lacey said. It was error-free only to a quarter of a second – technology now measures to 1/1000 of a second.

Racecourse chief executive Matt Reid said he was unmistakable for the clock to be on display after members of the Wellington Vintage Machinery Club spotted it in a racing club experiences book.

"To have it covered in rubbish was a disgrace," he said.

It now stands at the base of the stairwell of the members' stand.

Weighing more than a tonne, the clock took more than 10 men to relocate.

Mr Lacey worked at Trentham Racecourse from 1963 until last year. Despite his time spent at the racecourse, he said he was not a betting man but did from the atmosphere – especially steeplechase.

What do the following electrical ratings mean on a digital timer? You are not talking about the amend concern. Voltage is a fixed number. You need to understand the 3 components of tension:

Voltage is force that moves the electricity (in Volts)
Current is the measure of fervency moved (in Amps)
Power = Voltage * Amps (in Watts)

So if you know how many Watts your lights are, you principled work backwards to the current load. Your outlet will have a breaker that trips at 15 Amps. Bu this timer can only buy and sell 8 Amps and your Voltage is likely 115 - 120V. So your max Watts is 120 * 8 * = 960 Watts. The lights should have a Wattage rating on the box if they are new.

Tungsten lights are slightly unalike, and should only have a max loading of 600 Watts for this timer, but you won't likely have any tungsten holiday lights.

    Blithesome holidays!

I'm trying to manufacturer a new game but can't find digital timer manufacturers to supply the timers. Ideas? While countdown timers are comparatively easy to design and there are many kits available on the market to build your own, there are also numerous companies that deal in or manufacture these timers.

A quick search led me to the following:

Having been an electonic inventor for almost 20 years, I've also learned that when talking to most manufacturers and requesting work information, you need to be confident on the number of units that you are going to purchase. Let them be informed that you will require at least 1000 units per year to start (it doesn't sorry you have to buy 1000 up front) with an estimated usage of 10000 in three years. This shows you have a marketing scenario, potential growth, and the initial sale of 1000 units is usually enough to get most sales people to amends your call.

Remember in the end, you will want to develop your own just to reduce costs and to avoid having another manufacturers name on your output.
