Obama's Latest Betrayal: Don't Ask Don't Tell Seattle Post Intelligencer (blog)

Source:

The most one club in the world, or so it's sometimes called, currently has a membership of four: two Bushies, one Clinton, one Carter. Apparently, Mr. Obama is so wanting to join the Ex-Presidents Club that he's determined to keep on alienating his supporters and well-wishers while caving in to those who will hate and oppose him, no worry what he does. Most recent example: his manipulative cowardice on the militarily necessary, morally appropriate and long-past due repeal of the military's "Don't Ask Don't Tell" (DADT) policy on gays.

(Disclosure time. I'm happily hetero, a former Sea, and a citizen who believes that sexual orientation is irrelevant to the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.)

It's ugly enough that Mr. Obama announced his competition to gay marriage because of his religious beliefs. God is not a citizen. Nobody's God. And Mr. Obama's job is not to justify discrimination against his fellow citizens on such non-constitutional grounds, nor to give aid and comfort to those who would do so. But now, in in keeping Beltway style, he has made sure that nothing will be done about DADT on his watch.

In his State of the Union, Mr. Obama pledged to "work with" Congress to rescind DADT. A reasonable offer, since the policy is legislatively-mandated. Less than a week later, we learn that the Pentagon is about to arise a "process" of studying ways to implement gay equality under arms, a "process" that should take several years. Needless to say, Congress will be enchant to defer the issue until the Pentagon comes up with its recommendations, or else hold hearings full of sound and fury, signifying only the ascendancy of a bigotry aided and abetted by Mr. Obama.
