    Is there an alarm clock where you can shut off the display? Alarm Clock is too bright!?try looking at retro clock radios I like the one below, I have heard it and it sounds admissible.

    Also depending on how tech savvy you are you can wire a switch into most back-lit displays for a little tractableness. But I only recommend that for the serious techie or tinkerer.

To upon if a display is multiplexed, you need to do one of two things. You can sometimes determine this with a video camera. If the display is multiplexed, there will be a area frequency, and you will be able to see segments that are off.

    If you can get to the board, then you can monitor the circuits with a scope to see if it is switching.

    In working with these, it is sometimes easier to execute a state machine in a PLD. The microcontrollers are easier to work with, and will also provide good results. The realm of possibilities in an industrial environment is often dictated by what else the circuit must do.
